A teenage student was critically injured, and a former assistant wrestling coach died following an attempted murder-suicide shooting in the parking lot of Stewartville High School early Friday morning, authorities in Olmsted County confirmed.

Deputies were dispatched to the school, located approximately 10 miles south of Rochester, Minnesota, at around 5:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, after receiving reports of gunfire, according to Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson. Upon arrival, officers found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Investigators said the shooting occurred as a school bus was preparing to transport approximately 40 members of the Stewartville High School wrestling team to a scheduled meet. Several student-athletes and coaches were already on board when the incident unfolded.

“One of the teammates was walking in the parking lot when a gunshot was heard by others,” Sheriff Torgerson said during a press conference. “As students were trying to determine what had happened, they heard a second shot.”

The injured individual, identified as a male teenage student-athlete, was found on the ground by the coaching staff. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Family members later informed authorities that the student remains in critical but stable condition.

Nearby, deputies located an adult male with what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement identified the deceased as Logan Moyer, a former assistant wrestling coach with the Stewartville school district.

Sheriff Torgerson confirmed that Moyer had previously been terminated from his coaching position, though officials emphasized that the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigators work to establish the full sequence of events and any contributing factors.

“This is a very rare incident for our community and an emotional time for everyone involved,” Torgerson said. “This has impacted far more than just the families directly involved. It will be a difficult time moving forward.”

Students were safely reunited with their families later Friday morning, and school counselors and support staff were made available to assist students, staff, and community members affected by the incident.

In a message to families, Stewartville Superintendent Dr. Brian Selfors confirmed that law enforcement determined there is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the public. The district canceled all scheduled activities for the day, including the boys’ and girls’ basketball game against Lourdes, and stated that additional care and support services would be available over the weekend and when classes resume.

Minnesota lawmakers also responded to the tragedy. State Senator Gene Dornink released a statement expressing condolences and gratitude for first responders.

“It is devastating to hear of another shooting,” Dornink said. “Our hearts go out to the young man, his family, and the Stewartville community as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy. We are deeply grateful to law enforcement, first responders, teachers, coaches, classmates, and medical professionals who acted quickly to provide lifesaving care.”

State Senator Carla Nelson echoed those sentiments, calling the incident “tragic” and offering prayers for the injured student and the wider school community.

Law enforcement officials confirmed they are in contact with both families involved and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a follow-up press conference for Monday, December 15, at 9:00 a.m., to provide additional updates as information becomes available.

Authorities stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that verified details will be released as they are confirmed.
