Virginia Tech went into lockdown Thursday night following a fatal shooting reported near the university’s campus, prompting urgent shelter-in-place alerts to thousands of students, faculty, and staff.
According to initial information released by authorities, police responded to reports of an active shooter shortly after nightfall. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered one individual who had suffered fatal injuries. The victim was pronounced dead on-site.
As a precaution, the university issued an immediate emergency alert instructing community members to remain indoors, lock doors, and avoid windows while officers searched the surrounding area. Multiple law-enforcement agencies responded, including local police and campus security units, to assess the threat and secure the perimeter.
