Virginia Tech went into lockdown Thursday night following a fatal shooting reported near the university’s campus, prompting urgent shelter-in-place alerts to thousands of students, faculty, and staff.

According to initial information released by authorities, police responded to reports of an active shooter shortly after nightfall. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered one individual who had suffered fatal injuries. The victim was pronounced dead on-site.
