The Mansfield community is mourning after a heartbreaking incident that claimed the lives of 40-year-old Christopher David Casler and his 9-year-old son, Oliver, in what authorities describe as an apparent murder-suicide.
According to Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann, officers were dispatched at 12:06 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, to a residence at 927 Woodville Road following a report of two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. When officers entered the home, they discovered both the father and son inside.
Oliver was immediately transported to OhioHealth, where medical teams worked urgently to save him. Despite their efforts, he later died from his injuries. Christopher Casler was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Chief Bammann confirmed that the circumstances strongly indicate a murder–suicide, with evidence showing that Christopher Casler shot his son before turning the weapon on himself. Detectives from the Mansfield Division of Police, alongside the Richland County Coroner’s Office, are continuing their investigation to fully understand the events that unfolded.

Remembering Christopher and Oliver
Christopher Casler was known in the area, having graduated from St. Peter’s High School, Class of 2004, in Mansfield, and later continuing his education at North Central State College. He had also previously lived in Bayonne, New Jersey, before returning to Ohio.
Oliver, remembered as a joyful and energetic 9-year-old, loved swimming, spending time with family, and simply being a kid. Those who knew him describe a bright, happy child whose smile lit up every room he entered.
