Suspect in D.C. National Guard Shooting Identified as Afghan National Rahmanullah Lakanwal

WASHINGTON — During a press briefing, U.S. officials released the first image of the suspect involved in Wednesday’s attack on National Guard members near 17th and I Streets NW.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who previously worked with the U.S. in Afghanistan and was living in Washington state. Authorities say Lakanwal was apprehended at the scene after being shot by responding Guardsmen.

Officials highlighted that Lakanwal reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar” during the incident. They emphasized that the suspect is now in federal custody and that the investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement reviewing his background, motives, and potential connections.

The U.S. Attorney for D.C. and other federal officials warned the public to remain vigilant but noted that the situation is contained, and no further threats have been identified.
