WASHINGTON — Authorities have released the first images of the two National Guard members injured in yesterday’s attack near 17th and I Streets NW.
The victims have been identified as 24-year-old Andrew Wolf and 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, both serving with the West Virginia National Guard. The pair were ambushed while on duty just before Thanksgiving.
Andrew Wolf sustained critical injuries during the shooting but is now reported in stable condition. Sarah Beckstrom, also critically wounded, is receiving intensive care and is being closely monitored by medical staff.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. The suspect, 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was shot during the confrontation and is in custody.
Officials have praised the quick and courageous response of the Guardsmen, which prevented further casualties and helped contain the threat. The public is urged to provide any information that may aid the ongoing investigation.
