Teen charged with murder in shooting at The Marketplace

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Prosecutors have filed charges including murder against the teen accused of fatally shooting 15-year-old Prince Michael Banner a year ago at The Marketplace.

A petition was filed Tuesday against Albert Briseno Jr. alleging first-degree murder, possession of a handgun by a minor, carrying a loaded and stolen firearm and carrying an unregistered loaded firearm, prosecutors said.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Briseno, 15 at the time of the shooting, was arrested Monday and is due in juvenile court Dec. 1 for an initial detention hearing, prosecutors said. He remains in custody.

Due to his youth, Briseno, if convicted as charged, can be held at most until his 25th birthday.

Police have previously said Briseno shot Banner in November of last year at the southwest Bakersfield shopping center.

Banner was also armed, police said.

Police Chief Greg Terry has said Banner and Briseno “had some sort of a history or connection or knew each other prior to that night.”

Bakersfield police conducted the initial investigation, then District Attorney investigators “completed substantial follow-up investigative work,” said DA’s Office spokeswoman Daniela Gonzaga. A warrant was issued last month for Briseno’s arrest, she said.
