Brian and Stella Gallagher Cork Obituary News: Man in His 20s Arrested for Murder of Aunt and Serious Assault on Uncle in Ballinlough

A woman has died and a man remains in serious condition following a violent stabbing incident in the Ballinlough area of Cork on Monday night. Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s, understood to be a nephew of the couple, in connection with the attack.

The victims have been locally named as Stella and Brian Gallagher, long-time residents of Shrewsbury Downs. The couple, both chemical engineers, had lived in the estate for around two decades and were parents to four grown-up children—three sons and one daughter.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Emergency services, including members of the Armed Support Unit, were called to the estate at approximately 9.15pm following reports from neighbours of a disturbance outside a home. Shortly after the incident, a neighbourhood WhatsApp group circulated an urgent message warning residents to remain indoors and lock their doors.

The Gallaghers were rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) with critical injuries. Ms. Gallagher was later pronounced dead, while her husband Brian underwent emergency surgery and remains in a serious but stable condition.

A man in his 20s, armed with a knife and known to the couple, was arrested at the scene. He is being detained at a Cork City garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Gardaí are assessing his medical fitness for questioning and he was scheduled to be examined by a doctor on Monday evening. The knife believed to have been used in the attack has been recovered.

Ms. Gallagher’s body has been transferred to the CUH morgue, where a post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbourhood in Shock
Residents of the quiet estate of large red-brick houses described being stunned by the violence.

“I heard shouting last night and saw a man run past,” said one neighbour, who asked not to be named. “I locked my doors. I’m still in shock. This is a lovely, quiet neighbourhood.”

Another neighbour said the couple were quiet, kind people who had never caused any trouble.
“I hope he [Mr. Gallagher] pulls through. It’s such a tragedy. Everyone here is in shock.”

The scene remained cordoned off on Tuesday morning as Gardaí conducted a technical examination. A smashed ground-floor window was visible on a neighbouring house, with a broken plant pot and scattered soil marking signs of the disturbance.

It is understood that Mrs. Gallagher managed to reach a nearby green area before collapsing from her injuries. A local doctor rushed to her aid before paramedics arrived, according to neighbours.

Major Investigation Underway
Two members of An Garda Síochána carried out door-to-door inquiries shortly before 10am. The scene has been preserved for forensic analysis by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room established at Anglesea Street Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the Gallagher family.
