Multiple officers shot in rural Kansas, suspect reported dead

OSAGE COUNTY (KSNT) – One person is dead and four law enforcement officers are injured following a shooting incident near Carbondale, Kansas on Saturday.

Law enforcement personnel with the Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol and others were called to the area of South Topeka Avenue and West 113th Street the morning of Nov. 15. Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill told Nexstar’s KSNT law enforcement is responding to an officer-involved shooting in this area.

KBI Director Tony Mattivi said deputies with the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and KHP responded to a reported domestic disturbance around 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 15. Shortly after law enforcement arrived, gunfire erupted and one man was killed at the scene while another man was injured and transported to a hospital.

“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted as the director stated,” said KHP Superintendent Erik Smith during a press conference. “The suspect died from injuries he received from gunshot wounds.”

Mattivi said the identity of the shooting victim will be released after next of kin notifications are made. Four law enforcement personnel, three Osage County Sheriff’s deputies and one KHP trooper, were also shot during the incident.

The KHP trooper was initially taken to a Topeka hospital but has now been transferred to a Kansas City medical facility. The deputies and trooper have non-life-threatening injuries, according to the KHP.

The KBI is leading the investigation into this incident.

The TPD posted on social media that it sent officers to assist other law enforcement personnel at the scene. The TPD reported that none of its officers were injured in connection to the situation.
