The Southwest High School community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Angelina Terrazas, a beloved 17-year-old softball star, student, and friend whose light and strength inspired all who knew her. Angelina passed away on November 8, 2025, after a courageous battle with Stage 3 ovarian cancer.
A fierce competitor on the mound and a compassionate leader off it, Angelina embodied what it meant to be a Southwest Dragon. Known for her powerful pitching and relentless work ethic, she helped lead the Southwest High School Dragons Softball Team to multiple district wins and earned the admiration of teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
“She was a fierce competitor,” said Assistant Coach Taylor Doege, who also served as her pitching coach. “Her teammates played hard behind her because they knew her work ethic. She wasn’t afraid to hold them accountable and lift them up when it mattered most — that’s what made her such a true leader.”
Even when pain began to set in earlier this year, Angelina’s determination never wavered. In February, she pitched her team’s first district game — striking out 14 batters — despite not yet knowing she was battling cancer. Soon after, her diagnosis was confirmed, but rather than stepping away from the sport she loved, Angelina stayed by her teammates’ sides. She attended every game and practice her health allowed, cheering on her friends and serving as the team’s heart and spirit.
Her teammates lovingly called her the “Mother Hen” — a role she embraced with pride, always making sure the younger players felt seen, supported, and encouraged. “She was just a great friend, a great teammate, and she represented this community so well both on and off the field,” Doege said.
Just before her passing, Angelina was honored by Southwest ISD, receiving her high school diploma, becoming the first graduate of the Class of 2026. She was also awarded a full scholarship to the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky, where she planned to continue her softball career.
Her family, coaches, and friends say these honors represent the legacy of a young woman who gave her all — not only to the game but to life itself. “She never did anything halfway,” said one of her coaches. “She was a competitor, a force to be reckoned with, and she left a mark that will never fade.”
In her memory, Southwest Softball will host a Prayer Circle on Tuesday, November 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Southwest Softball Stadium. The community is invited to come together to celebrate Angelina’s life, share memories, and offer support to her family. All proceeds from items sold at the event will go directly to the Terrazas family.
