Iowa City Fatal Shooting: Fatal Shooting Reported Near University of Iowa Campus; One Killed, Lockdown Lifted

A shooting near the University of Iowa campus on Friday prompted a series of emergency alerts urging students and residents to shelter in place, after gunfire was reported in the area of Burlington and Governor Streets. Authorities have confirmed that one person was killed in the incident.


According to University of Iowa Campus Safety, the first HAWK ALERT was issued Friday afternoon, warning of gunshots in the area and advising the campus community to avoid the vicinity and seek shelter. Police officers from Iowa City Police Department and campus security responded to the scene immediately.

A subsequent update reported that the suspect fled the area on foot, initially described as heading eastbound before later reports indicated a westbound direction. The university advised students, staff, and nearby residents to remain vigilant and continue sheltering while law enforcement searched the vicinity.

Officials later clarified that the incident originated off campus and emphasized that there was no information indicating additional shots had been fired during the lockdown period. The university urged anyone with information or who observed suspicious activity to contact 911.

In the final HAWK ALERT update, authorities stated that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the university community. Normal activities were allowed to resume, though community members were encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings.

The name of the victim has not yet been released, and no arrests were immediately announced. The Iowa City Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation.
