Vandergrift High School Accident: Train-Bus Collision Involving Vandergrift High School Marching Band in San Antonio Under Investigation

A serious accident involving a Leander Independent School District bus carrying members of the Vandergrift High School marching band and a train occurred Monday afternoon in San Antonio, prompting a major emergency response from local and state authorities.

According to early reports from law enforcement, the collision took place at a railroad crossing in northeast San Antonio. The bus, which was transporting students and staff from Vandergrift High School, was struck by an oncoming train. Multiple emergency units, including Schertz Police, San Antonio Fire, and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of injuries, but officials said several students and adults were evaluated by paramedics. Some victims were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment. The identities and conditions of those involved have not been released.

Leander ISD officials confirmed that the bus was part of a convoy returning from a band competition event over the weekend. The district said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and expressed deep concern for all students and families affected by the crash.

> “Our thoughts are with our Vandergrift High School students, staff, and families during this difficult time,” the district said in a brief statement. “We are working closely with emergency personnel to ensure everyone’s safety and to provide support to those impacted.”

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was attempting to cross the tracks when the train approached. Authorities are working to determine whether any warning signals or barriers were active at the time.

Yesterday, Schertz Police issued a public reminder urging drivers to exercise caution at railroad crossings after a separate collision between an 18-wheeler and a train on Sunday morning. That crash, which occurred near FM 3009 and Lookout Road, caused significant delays but resulted in no major injuries.

Police say both incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of rail safety.

“Trains can take over a mile to stop. We urge all drivers to be patient, stay alert, and never try to beat a train at a crossing,” a Schertz Police spokesperson said.

As the investigation continues, counselors and support staff are being made available to students and families in the Vandergrift High School community.

Authorities plan to release additional details as more information becomes available.
