SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Despite facing years of health challenges, Bruce never let his illness define him, remaining steadfast in his dedication to service, community, and family. Bruce began his journey with the Boston Police Department on October 20, 2003, as part of Academy Class #40-03.

Through his hard work and commitment, he earned the rank of Detective in 2012, serving proudly in District C-11 (Dorchester) and the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit). Whether as a patrol officer or detective, Bruce was admired for his integrity, professionalism, and strong sense of duty.

A talented athlete in his youth, Bruce was a standout on the basketball court. He played for the Catholic Memorial Knights (Class of 1993) and later for the Bridgewater State University Bears (Class of 1997), scoring an incredible 1,727 points in 106 games. His passion for basketball later inspired him to return to Catholic Memorial as a coach, where he mentored countless young men both in the game and in life.

In recognition of his exemplary service, Bruce received the Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Award in 2012 — the highest law enforcement honor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This prestigious award reflected his bravery, character, and lifelong dedication to protecting others.

Throughout his life, Bruce wore many hats — Point Guard, Senior Captain, Coach, Officer, Detective, Partner, Mentor, and Friend — yet the roles he cherished most were those of Husband and Father. He is survived by his loving wife Lori, daughter Madelyn, and son Ryan, who were his greatest joy and source of strength.

“Detective Bruce Higgins was well respected and well liked by all who had the pleasure of knowing or working with him,” the department shared. “A true team player through and through, Bruce’s decency, resilience, humility, and perseverance will never be forgotten.”

The Boston Police Department and the greater Massachusetts law enforcement community mourn the loss of a dedicated detective, mentor, and family man whose legacy of courage and compassion will continue to inspire future generations.
