Andy Payton devoted his professional life to education and coaching, making a lasting impact on every student he encountered. As an Instructional Strategist II BD/LD at Waterloo West High School, Andy was known for his patience, empathy, and ability to bring out the best in his students.
He approached teaching with a rare combination of firmness and compassion, always ensuring that each student felt seen, supported, and capable of achieving greatness.
Before returning to his hometown, Andy shared his talents at Manhattan High School and Ankeny Centennial High School, where he was equally admired by students and staff.
His dedication to special education reflected his belief that every student deserves an opportunity to learn and succeed, regardless of challenges. His calm demeanor, encouraging spirit, and passion for growth made him not only an exceptional educator but also a guiding light for many young lives.
A proud Waterloo native, Andy graduated from West High School before pursuing his higher education at the University of Iowa and Upper Iowa University. It was there that he built the foundation of his teaching career and discovered his passion for helping others realize their full potential.
Those who knew him best describe him as someone who always led with kindness, integrity, and humility. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, Andy was also a highly respected coach, known for motivating his players both on and off the field.
His coaching philosophy focused not just on winning games, but on building character, teamwork, and perseverance. Students affectionately referred to him as “Coach Payton” or “Mr. Payton,” remembering his ability to turn every challenge into a teachable moment.
