Wayne Broadhurst, 49, tragically died after the incident in Midhurst Gardens on Monday. The attack also left a 14-year-old boy injured and a 45-year-old man with what police have described as “life-changing injuries.”

The suspect, Safi Dawood, 22, has been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London North, Jaswant Narwal, said:

“We have worked closely with the Metropolitan Police Service as they carried out their investigation.”

Police confirmed that Dawood and Broadhurst were not known to each other, but Dawood was acquainted with the two other victims.

Dawood was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He later required hospital treatment after suffering a medical episode but has since been returned to police custody.

According to the Home Office, Dawood entered the UK clandestinely in 2020 via a lorry and was granted asylum and leave to remain in 2022.

Emergency services were called to Midhurst Gardens after alarmed residents reported the violence. It is understood that Broadhurst was attacked while trying to intervene in an altercation.

On Tuesday evening, members of the community gathered for a vigil to pay tribute to the victims. Mourners laid flowers and lit candles in memory of Wayne Broadhurst.

A neighbour described the victim as a “kind and ordinary man” who worked as a bin collector.

“He was the last person on Earth you’d think something like this would happen to,” she said.
“He was just doing his normal dog walk like he does every day. It’s heartbreaking.”

A spokesperson for the Home Office said:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected by this horrific incident. We are receiving regular updates from the Metropolitan Police. The priority now must be for the police to investigate fully so those responsible can be brought to justice.”
