A tragic crash on Interstate 94 left one passenger dead and another man hospitalized Monday afternoon, officials confirmed. The accident occurred just west of Manning Avenue around 2:14 p.m. and involved a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Corolla.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the driver of the Corvette lost control, causing the vehicle to spin out and roll into the south ditch. The Corolla’s driver also left the roadway, coming to rest nearby.
The Corvette’s passenger, 83-year-old Thomas Samuel Amsbaugh of Downing, Wisconsin, was transported to Regions Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Corvette’s driver, 76-year-old Peter Henry Jungenberg of Menomonie, Wisconsin, was also taken to Regions with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Corolla, a 30-year-old man from North Saint Paul, was uninjured.
Authorities confirmed that all three individuals were wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The roadway was dry at the time of the incident.
The crash remains under investigation. Emergency crews from Woodbury Police and Fire, as well as officers from Cottage Grove and Oakdale, assisted at the scene.
This devastating accident has left the community mourning the loss of Thomas Amsbaugh, and authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
