According to officials, first responders were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. after receiving a frantic 911 call reporting that a woman had fallen into a drain that was under maintenance. Police Chief Cal Green said that two individuals had fallen into the drain while walking during the thunderstorm, but one managed to climb out and immediately call for help. Sadly, Dixon was swept away by the rushing water before rescuers could reach her.
Natchez Fire Chief Robert Arrington described the rescue as an incredibly difficult effort. Firefighters had to break apart sections of concrete around a nearby manhole to fit rescue equipment and access the underground system. After an intense search, Dixon’s body was recovered approximately 20 feet from where she had fallen.
“It was a job to get her out,” Arrington said somberly, commending the efforts of all responders who worked through challenging conditions to bring her home.
Police Chief Green expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “It’s very tragic. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.” He emphasized that the city is investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, including whether Dixon’s death was caused by the fall itself or by drowning.
Lashonda Dixon’s death has left the Natchez community in shock and mourning. Friends and neighbors remember her as a kindhearted, joyful woman who cared deeply for her family. Many have begun leaving flowers and candles near the scene as a show of love and remembrance.
City officials are now reviewing safety measures around the area to prevent similar tragedies in the future. As stormwater projects continue across Natchez, leaders have promised a thorough evaluation of drainage openings and signage during construction zones.
For now, the city mourns the loss of a beloved resident — a life taken far too soon by an unforeseen accident during a night of heavy rain.
