A tragic single-vehicle crash early Monday morning has claimed the life of 27-year-old Ramiro Torres of Brownsville, leaving the local school community mourning the loss of a respected colleague and friend.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around 1 a.m. on FM 3248 near Dr. Hugh Emerson Road. A preliminary investigation determined that Torres was driving a 2004 black Chevrolet Silverado westbound while reportedly racing a Chevrolet Camaro.
Authorities say Torres lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right, slid onto its side, and collided with a utility pole. Despite the quick response from emergency crews, Torres succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
A female passenger in the vehicle was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Her current condition has not been disclosed.
Later that day, Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) confirmed that Torres worked as a security officer at Manzano Middle School. The district released a heartfelt statement mourning his loss:
“Mr. Torres was a respected member of our school community, valued for his commitment, professionalism, and the positive relationship he built with students, staff, and families. His loss is deeply felt. Our thoughts are with Officer Torres’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask for respect and privacy for the family as they grieve.”
The Texas DPS continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the alleged street racing incident.
Ramiro Torres’ untimely death has left a deep void in the Brownsville community, where he was remembered as a dedicated employee, a kind-hearted individual, and someone who took pride in keeping others safe.
