CHESTER, Calif. — A devastating crash along Highway 36 near Chester has left two families and communities grieving the loss of two young men. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the fatal accident occurred between late Thursday night and early Friday morning when a 2001 Lexus SUV traveling eastbound went off the roadway just west of the North Shore Campground near Lake Almanor.
Investigators say the vehicle left the road for unknown reasons, rolling several times before coming to rest down a steep embankment surrounded by trees and brush. Both occupants, 26-year-old Austin Devries of Oroville and 23-year-old Jace Turner of Magalia, were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that neither was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
CHP officials believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor, though the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine the exact cause.
The tragic loss of Austin and Jace has left their families, friends, and communities heartbroken. Those who knew them describe two kindhearted young men who brought light and laughter wherever they went. Their untimely passing is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of safe and responsible driving.
