PHOENIX, AZ —** A 32-year-old man was killed early Friday morning in a **hit-and-run crash** that left him dying in the middle of the road as the driver fled the scene. Police say **Miguel Alteres** was struck while crossing **43rd Avenue near McDowell Road** just before **5:45 a.m.** Witnesses told officers they saw a **gray Jeep Cherokee** stop briefly after the impact. A woman stepped out of the vehicle, appeared to look toward the injured man, then got back in and **drove away**, leaving Alteres gravely injured.
When Phoenix Fire crews arrived, they found Alteres lying in the roadway with severe trauma. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced **dead at the scene**. The early-morning crash shut down part of 43rd Avenue as investigators from the **Phoenix Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit** collected evidence and reviewed nearby surveillance footage.
By Friday evening, detectives had identified the suspect vehicle and began searching for its driver. Less than 24 hours later, on **Saturday**, police announced the **arrest of 24-year-old Michelle Guzman-Garcia**, the woman believed to have been behind the wheel at the time of the fatal collision.
Guzman-Garcia is now facing **multiple charges**, including leaving the scene of a deadly accident.Authorities have not released details on what led up to the crash or whether impairment or distraction played a role, but they emphasized that **fleeing the scene of an accident** is a serious felony offense.
Community members have since created a small roadside memorial near the intersection, where flowers and candles mark the spot where Alteres lost his life. Police continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen the gray Jeep Cherokee prior to the crash to come forward as the investigation continues.
