Tragedy struck late Friday night in the Town of Preble when a two-vehicle collision claimed the life of Wallace Grevelding, according to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on October 24, 2025, at the intersection of State Route 281 and Preble Road.

Authorities say Grevelding was driving a Ford SUV that reportedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection, where it was struck by a Ford pickup truck traveling along State Route 281. The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles.
Emergency personnel from the Preble Fire Department, Tully Fire Department, Homer Fire Department, TLC Emergency Medical Services, and the Cortland County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. Despite their efforts, Wallace Grevelding succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was transported to Upstate Medical Center for treatment; their current condition has not been disclosed.
The crash led to significant traffic delays in the area as investigators and cleanup crews worked to secure the scene. The New York State Police, New York State Department of Transportation, and Ron’s Towing also assisted in the response.
