Pittsburgh authorities are investigating after an infant’s body was discovered in the trunk of a vehicle on Friday night.
The investigation began when a woman from Ohio Township arrived at a Pittsburgh hospital after giving birth — but did not have the baby with her. Hospital staff alerted authorities, prompting officers to question the woman about the infant’s whereabouts.
Ohio Township officers were subsequently led to a vehicle on Federal Street, where they discovered the infant’s body wrapped in clothing and placed inside a plastic bag.
According to a spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Safety, the Mobile Crime Unit and Violent Crime Unit responded to the scene on Federal Street, as well as a residence on the 100 block of Marshall Avenue, a location the woman is known to frequent. Detectives reportedly found evidence suggesting that a baby had recently been born at the residence.
The woman is currently receiving treatment at the hospital and will be transported to police headquarters for questioning once she is medically cleared.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the cause and manner of the infant’s death. Pittsburgh police stress that the investigation remains active, and no charges have been filed at this time.
This tragic case has shocked the Pittsburgh community as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
This is a developing story.
