Dick Tavernes Obituary News: Liberal Democrat Founder Dick Taverne Dies Aged 97

The co-founder of the Liberal Democrats, Lord Dick Taverne, has died peacefully at the age of 97 at his home in London, leaving behind a legacy as a principled and influential politician.

Lord Taverne played a pivotal role in British politics, co-founding the Liberal Democrats in 1988 when the Social Democratic Party (SDP) merged with the Liberal Party. He served as MP for Lincoln between 1962 and 1974, holding ministerial positions in both the Treasury and the Home Department, and famously won the 1973 Lincoln by-election after resigning from the Labour Party over his pro-European Union stance.

In addition to his political career, Lord Taverne became the first Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 1970, establishing a reputation for expertise in public finance and economic policy. He was appointed to the House of Lords in 1996.

Paying tribute, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey described him as “a passionate, principled and thoughtful colleague.”

Lord Taverne is survived by his wife of 70 years, Janice, and their daughters, Suzanna and Caroline. The family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dick Taverne. He was a much loved and loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will all miss him enormously.”
