The passengers had no idea their driver was racing another car until it was too late — and by then, three teenage boys were dead on Rosehill Road. On **October 8, 2025**, **Dymond Nekiya Monroe**, 21, was driving her 2024 **Honda Civic** with three passengers — **Trevor Merritt** and **Nicholas Williams**, both 17, and **Jai’Hyon Elliott**, 18 — all standout football players at **E.E. Smith High School** in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

They were on their way to a surprise birthday party for Monroe’s younger brother, who also played on the team, when the unthinkable happened.Investigators say Monroe was engaged in a **“willful speed competition”** with her sister, **19-year-old Destini Rhinada Genwright**, who was driving another vehicle.

Both were reportedly racing down Rosehill Road, hitting speeds nearly **double the 45 mph limit**, weaving in and out of traffic as the teens in the back laughed and listened to music — unaware of the danger. Moments later, Monroe lost control. Her Civic veered off the road, slammed into a utility pole, and split apart on impact.When emergency responders arrived, they found a devastating scene.

All three young men were pronounced dead at the site. Monroe was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Her sister stopped at the scene but was later taken into custody. Police have since charged both women with **three counts of vehicular manslaughter**, **reckless driving**, and **participation in a speed competition**.

The Fayetteville community has been left shattered. Vigils have been held on the E.E. Smith football field, where teammates and coaches honored the boys’ memories with candles, jerseys, and prayers.
