The Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Downtown Milwaukee Campus was placed on a hard lockdown Thursday as police responded to an ongoing investigation in the area.
School officials and local law enforcement confirmed that students, staff, and visitors were ordered to shelter in place and that everyone was being instructed to avoid the campus until further notice.
The lockdown was initiated late Thursday morning after a report of a potential threat on or near the campus. Authorities have not yet released details about the nature of the incident or whether any injuries have been reported.
MATC issued an alert to students and faculty shortly after the lockdown began, stating:
“The Downtown Milwaukee Campus is currently on a hard lockdown due to an active investigation. Please remain where you are and await further instructions. Do not come to campus at this time.”
Milwaukee Police officers were seen securing the perimeter of the downtown campus, with multiple squad cars and emergency vehicles stationed around the area. Roads near the main building were temporarily blocked as a precaution while officers worked to assess the situation.
As of early Thursday afternoon, no suspects had been publicly identified, and police had not disclosed whether the threat was confirmed or precautionary.
Authorities emphasized that the lockdown was implemented out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
