LMU Police Clear Shooting Threat After Lockdown at Westchester Campus

The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Westchester campus was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday after reports of a possible shooting threat, prompting a large police response and shelter-in-place orders for students and staff. Authorities later confirmed that the reports were unfounded, and there was no danger to the campus community.

According to an LMU Alert sent to students and faculty, police activity was first reported in Parking Lot I on the Westchester campus. The alert instructed community members to avoid the area while Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers and LMU Public Safety investigated.

Shortly after, the university issued a follow-up message advising everyone on campus to shelter in place as a precaution while authorities worked to assess the situation.

By late afternoon, LMU confirmed that the active threat had been cleared, and it was safe to resume normal activities.

“The active threat on the Westchester campus has been cleared. You can stop sheltering in place,” the university announced. “Follow instructions from Public Safety and LAPD.”

In a final update, LMU and LAPD stated that reports of a possible threat were unfounded.

“LAPD confirmed reports of possible threats were unfounded,” the university wrote in its last alert. “No change to classes and campus operations are normal.”

LAPD officers and campus security remained on-site for a period after the all-clear to ensure safety and provide reassurance to students returning to regular campus activity.

No injuries or arrests were reported.

LMU thanked its students, staff, and faculty for their cooperation and calm during the incident and reiterated that safety remains the university’s top priority.

📢 For ongoing safety information and campus alerts, members of the LMU community are encouraged to monitor official LMU Alert messages and follow instructions from Public Safety.
