According to Fresno Police, Hare had been under investigation for retail theft and impersonating a police officer. Detectives arranged to meet him Tuesday at the northwest Fresno Police Station. When he arrived, officers attempted to take him into custody, but Hare reportedly resisted arrest and tried to draw a gun.

Officers used a Taser multiple times before successfully restraining him. Hare was then transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. While at the hospital, police say Hare requested to use the restroom, where he suddenly attacked an officer and managed to seize the officer’s firearm. He then turned the weapon on himself, suffering a fatal gunshot wound.

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto confirmed that Hare died from his injuries. The department did not specify when he was employed with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities review how Hare was able to access the officer’s weapon while in custody.
