A woman who was found with severe injuries Tuesday night in Bridgeport has died, and police are now investigating her death as a homicide.
According to the Bridgeport Police Department, officers were called to the 200 block of Black Rock Avenue around 9:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an abandoned child. When they arrived, they found a young child on the front porch of a home and soon after discovered the child’s mother, 24-year-old Evelyn Rayo-Mairena, lying unresponsive in the street nearby.
Medics performed CPR at the scene before rushing Rayo-Mairena to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Detectives have not yet released details about the nature of her injuries.
“Homicide detectives have been working the case throughout the night and are following several leads,” said Detective Jeffrey Holtz of the Bridgeport Police Department.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Police say the child was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation and is safe.
