A 16-year-old student from Hale County High School was killed Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Alabama Highway 69.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the crash occurred around 6:40 p.m., approximately 12 miles south of Tuscaloosa. The teen, identified by family and a GoFundMe page as Slade Holcomb, was hit by a Ford F-150 driven by 76-year-old Warner L. Rainer of Tuscaloosa. Holcomb was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
Holcomb was remembered by classmates as a kind and spirited student, full of energy and dreams. At the time of the accident, he had been working with classmates on a homecoming float in preparation for the school’s Homecoming Week.
Hale County High School Principal Ronnie Garner said Holcomb was a “beloved member of our school community” and noted that counselors and support staff were available to students and faculty following the tragedy.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
