A tragic accident claimed the life of a Colorado man during the Abilene Airstrip Attack racing event on Sunday afternoon, October 19.
According to the Abilene Police Department, the crash occurred at the Abilene Regional Airport when a modified 2006 Chevy Corvette lost control during a timed run. The vehicle rolled multiple times before catching fire.
The driver and sole occupant, identified as 74-year-old Gregory Vernon Ibsen of Colorado, was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders worked quickly to extinguish the fire and secure the area, but Ibsen’s injuries were fatal.
In a statement, the Abilene Police Department extended condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Event organizers have not released additional details, and no other injuries were reported.
