The incident occurred at Lakeside Shopping Center, 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd, one of the busiest retail destinations in the New Orleans area. Around 3 p.m., panic spread through parts of the mall after reports circulated of an active shooter. Shoppers began running for exits, knocking over displays and causing minor injuries.

Emergency responders from Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and area EMS units arrived within minutes. Three individuals were treated for injuries sustained in the rush to escape and were transported to a nearby hospital. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, officials said.

A text alert sent from mall management to store managers shortly after the incident confirmed that there was no active shooter and urged businesses to remain secured until police cleared the scene.

“No shooting occurred at Lakeside Mall. Out of an abundance of caution, the mall remains temporarily locked down while officers ensure everyone’s safety,” Lakeside Shopping Center said in an internal message shared with store managers.

Law enforcement officers are now sweeping the premises to verify that the area is secure. Shoppers are being asked to avoid the mall until further notice.

By late afternoon, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the lockdown would remain in place until all areas had been searched and cleared. Authorities are investigating what triggered the initial reports of gunfire.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
