The officiating community, the collegiate sports world, and countless friends across the country are mourning the profound loss of Terry Wymer — a mentor, leader, and dear friend to so many. Terry served as the Executive Director of the Collegiate Officiating Consortium and Coordinator of Officials for the Big Ten and Mountain West Conferences. But beyond the titles and accolades, Terry was, above all, a person of unmatched character, warmth, and generosity.
Terry Wymer Referee North Baltimore, OH Death, Obituary
It’s difficult to put into words just how much Terry meant to those fortunate enough to know him. For nearly two decades, I had the privilege of calling him my friend. Over the past ten years, that friendship deepened into something I cherished dearly. He had a way of showing up exactly when you needed him — even when you hadn’t said a word. More than once, Terry somehow knew when I was going through difficult times, even hospital stays. He never explained how he knew — he simply picked up the phone, checked in, and asked what I needed. That was Terry. Quietly looking out for others, always with compassion, and never asking for anything in return.
Terry believed in people. He invested in us — not just as officials, but as human beings. He took the time to build relationships, to offer guidance, and to remind us of our worth. Whether it was through a quick phone call, a camp session, or a conversation courtside, his words carried weight, and his presence made you feel seen and valued.
I will always remember our time together in Las Vegas for the UNC/UK game in 2021 — the last photo I have of him is from that trip. It reminds me of his energy, his laughter, and his deep love for the game and the people within it.
The impact Terry had on the Big Ten, the Mountain West, and the broader officiating family is immeasurable. But more importantly, the impact he had on our hearts is everlasting.
