Authorities say 47-year-old Donald Rownan was attempting to flee from police due to an outstanding felony warrant when he ran a red light at high speed, colliding with another vehicle that had the right of way.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old Paola Parbol, was pronounced dead at the scene. Parbol was a student at Pacific Lutheran University, studying criminal justice, and also worked part-time at a daycare, where she was beloved for her compassion and dedication to children.

“She shouldn’t be out. He shouldn’t be free. He took the life of a woman I love,” said Gabriel Pangelinan, Parbol’s boyfriend, who attended the court hearing for Rownan.

Prosecutors revealed that Rownan, who has an extensive criminal record dating back to 1997, was released from prison just two months ago. In charging documents, officials stated that he showed an “egregious lack of remorse,” attempting to blame law enforcement for pursuing him.

Rownan now faces eight criminal charges, including:

Murder in the second degree
Vehicular homicide
Vehicular assault
Failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death or injury
Eluding police
Escape from community custody
Reckless driving
He remains in custody on $750,000 bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for November.

A memorial and vigil were held Thursday evening at the crash site to honor Paola Parbol’s life. Her family has also established a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and memorial arrangements: Support Paola Parbol’s Family.
