The martial arts world is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures. Jeff “Duke” Roufus, legendary MMA coach, kickboxing champion, and founder of Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has passed away peacefully in his sleep. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by longtime student and former UFC champion Anthony Pettis, who shared a heartfelt tribute to the man he considered not just a coach, but family.
Duke Roufus Milwaukee, WI Cause of Death, Obituary
“Duke Roufus, I love you, coach. Thank you for everything you have taught me in my life. Can’t believe you’re really gone. Just two weeks ago we were flying back from Dubai, sitting side by side, talking about the future. I’m thankful for being your student and getting to do everything we did together. It’s a story that won’t be forgotten. Rest in peace, Coach. You will never be forgotten.” — Anthony Pettis
Duke Roufus was more than a trainer. He was a visionary who helped shape modern MMA as we know it. A world-class kickboxer in his own right, Duke transitioned into coaching and built Roufusport into one of the most respected training camps in the world. His roster of fighters reads like a Hall of Fame induction list: Anthony and Sergio Pettis, Ben Askren, CM Punk, Stephan Bonnar, Jens Pulver, Tyron Woodley, and many more came through the doors of his gym — and through the mentorship of a man who believed in them.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a proud alumnus of Pius XI High School, Duke carried his hometown pride with him around the globe. Despite achieving international fame, he never lost his roots or his humility. To his fighters, he wasn’t just a coach — he was a motivator, a father figure, and a relentless believer in the greatness of others.
His passing is a devastating loss not only to his family, friends, and students but to the entire combat sports community. Yet, his legacy is far from over. The Roufusport philosophy — built on discipline, integrity, family, and heart — will live on through the fighters and coaches who carry his teachings forward. Every punch thrown, every belt earned, every fighter’s rise to glory will echo Duke’s influence.
To the Roufusport family and the global martial arts community: we grieve together, but we also celebrate a life that changed countless others. Duke Roufus may be gone, but his voice, vision, and warrior spirit will never fade.
Rest in power, Coach Duke Roufus.
Your fight is over, but your legacy will never be forgotten.
