Authorities are investigating the death of a female medical student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, after her body was discovered under what police describe as suspicious circumstances on Thursday morning.
According to early reports, the student — who resided at George Alleyne Hall — was found unresponsive in her room by her roommate, who immediately alerted campus security and emergency services.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirmed that law enforcement officers from Area Four Headquarters responded to the scene shortly after.
Head of Area Four Police, Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, stated that the incident is currently being treated as a death investigation, noting that while preliminary findings suggest the student may have taken her own life, investigators have not ruled out other possibilities.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death,” ACP Phipps said.
The student’s name and age have not yet been released, pending notification of her family.
In a brief statement, UWI Mona Campus Registrar Donovan Stanberry said the university is aware of the situation but will not be commenting further at this time out of respect for the ongoing investigation and the student’s family.
Campus officials have reportedly increased support services for students residing in George Alleyne Hall and surrounding residence halls.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the UWI Mona community, particularly among medical students who described their peer as quiet, focused, and well-liked.
Counseling services are being made available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Half-Way Tree Police Station or the UWI Campus Security Unit as investigations proceed.
