A tragic shooting in Maringouin on Thursday night left a 17-year-old dead and another person injured, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire around 6:12 p.m. at the Ridgewood Apartments, where they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The teenager who died has been identified as Derrien Scott, a student in the Iberville Parish School District. Authorities said the second victim, a 19-year-old, was also from the Maringouin area and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been released.
The quiet town of Maringouin has been left in shock and grief as word of the tragedy spread. Friends and classmates described Derrien as a bright, kind-hearted young man who was known for his good spirit and strong connection to his community. Many took to social media to express their heartbreak and share condolences with his family.
Sheriff Brett Stassi said investigators are continuing to gather information about what led up to the shooting. At this time, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any details about possible suspects or motives.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our community,” Sheriff Stassi said. “We’re working diligently to find out exactly what happened and bring justice to the victim and his family.”
