A tragic shooting Tuesday evening at a popular Korean barbecue restaurant in La Habra has left two people dead in what police are calling a murder-suicide involving former romantic partners.
According to a news release from the La Habra Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Gui Gui 9292 Korean BBQ, located in a busy commercial area of the city.
When officers arrived, they found 45-year-old Jacqueline Medrano, of Covina, and 35-year-old Jonathan Wang, of Long Beach, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the two dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Wang fatally shot Medrano before turning the gun on himself. Police confirmed that there were other patrons inside the restaurant at the time of the incident, but no one else was injured. The restaurant was reportedly about four hours from closing when the shooting occurred.
According to police, Medrano and Wang had previously been in a romantic relationship. About a month prior to the shooting, the Los Angeles County Superior Court had issued a criminal protective order against Wang, barring him from contacting Medrano. Authorities confirmed that the order was still active when the murder-suicide occurred.
“There is no known threat to the public,” police said in their statement, emphasizing that the case appears to be isolated and domestic in nature.
Gui Gui 9292 Korean BBQ did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Wang, who police identified as the shooter, was a graduate of Pasadena City College and California State University, Long Beach – College of Business, according to educational records.
The La Habra Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how Wang obtained the firearm used in violation of the court order.
La Habra, a city roughly 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles, has seen few violent incidents of this nature in recent years, and local authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the case to contact the department’s investigations bureau.
