It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the sudden and heartbreaking passing of Todd Funkhouser, affectionately known as “Mr. Funk,” “Uncle T,” and “T-Funk” to the many who knew and loved him. Todd passed away from a cardiac event while hiking one of his favorite places—the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls. Though good Samaritans quickly called for help, emergency responders were unable to reach him in time due to the difficult terrain.
Former Horizon Elementary Teacher Died of Cardiac Event
Todd lived with purpose, passion, and an unmistakable spark. As a dedicated physical education teacher at Horizon Elementary, he spent five unforgettable years shaping young lives with energy, humor, and a fierce love for his students. He wasn’t just a teacher—he was a safe space, a role model, a friend, and a source of endless laughter for kids and colleagues alike. His students were “his kids,” and he gave them everything he had.
Todd had a personality larger than life—funny as hell, fiercely loyal, and always unapologetically himself. He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help a friend, speak the truth even when it made people laugh at the wrong moment, and show up when it mattered most. He built lasting bonds with his Horizon teammates, who still remember his final day at school on June 13, 2018, as one filled with joy and unforgettable memories—“The Dream Team,” as he lovingly called them.
Beyond the classroom, Todd found peace and joy in nature, particularly on the trails he loved to hike. That he passed doing something he loved brings a small comfort to those mourning this tremendous loss.
He will be cremated, and a celebration of life is being planned by his family. Details will be shared in the coming days through Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, VA.
His sister, Lauren, and their mother extend heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support already received. As Lauren shared:
“Our hearts go out to everyone as we share the burden of losing Todd — who was just a good human being and funny as hell. He loved being a teacher and lived for ‘his’ kids at school.”
To his students, friends, colleagues, and all who had the joy of knowing Todd: may you carry forward the laughter, the love, and the light he brought into your life.
