Gerardo Garcia, 38, Killed in Late-Night Crash on Highway in Upton County

Gerardo Garcia, 38, of Midland, lost his life late Friday night in a devastating crash along U.S. Highway 385 in Upton County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. near mile marker 376, roughly 25 miles south of Midland. Investigators say Garcia was driving his Chevrolet Silverado southbound when a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, towing a trailer, suddenly pulled from the roadside into his lane.

The Escalade’s driver, identified as 52-year-old Steven Paul Latzel, had been stopped on the shoulder moments before attempting an unsafe turn into southbound traffic. Despite Garcia’s efforts, he was unable to avoid the collision. The impact was severe, leaving Garcia’s truck heavily damaged. He was wearing his seatbelt, but the force of the crash caused fatal injuries. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Latzel, who was uninjured, remained and cooperated fully with investigators.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

The highway was closed for several hours as troopers documented the scene and cleared debris. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time. Authorities will review evidence and witness statements to determine whether speed, visibility, or possible driver error played a role.

Friends and family described Garcia as a hardworking man devoted to his loved ones and respected throughout the community. His sudden loss has left deep heartbreak among those who knew him. Tributes have poured in online, with many remembering his generosity, easy laughter, and love for his family.

Upton County officials are reminding drivers to use extreme caution when re-entering highways, especially at night, when visibility is limited. As the community mourns, loved ones of Gerardo Garcia are left to honor his memory and the life cut tragically short on a quiet West Texas highway.
