Michigan State Police (MSP) are investigating a deadly incident that occurred Saturday evening on Interstate 696 (I-696) near Woodward Avenue, where two people were found dead following reports of a possible freeway shooting.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

According to MSP, troopers responded to emergency calls just after 7 p.m., reporting shots fired on the westbound lanes of I-696. Upon arrival, officers discovered two victims inside a vehicle along the roadway. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of family members.

Investigation Shuts Down Major Freeway
In response to the incident, police have closed the westbound I-696 at I-75 while detectives and forensic teams conduct an extensive search for evidence. Investigators are examining the victims’ vehicle, collecting shell casings, and reviewing nearby traffic and surveillance cameras in an effort to determine what led to the fatal encounter.

Michigan State Police confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that investigators from the Second District Special Investigations Section are handling the case. Troopers are working to establish whether the deaths were the result of a targeted shooting, a road rage incident, or another form of violence.

“This remains an active investigation,” MSP said in an update. “Detectives are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to determine exactly what happened.”

Traffic and Safety Advisory
The freeway closure caused significant traffic delays through the evening as motorists were diverted onto alternate routes. MSP urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate paths until the investigation is complete.

Authorities have not yet confirmed if a suspect vehicle has been identified or if anyone is in custody.

Public Asked for Information
Michigan State Police are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who was traveling in the area between 6:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Saturday evening and may have witnessed the incident or captured dashcam footage is urged to contact the MSP Metro North Post or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

As of late Saturday night, the investigation is ongoing, and the westbound lanes of I-696 remain temporarily closed while police continue to process the scene.
