The Kendall County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the tragic deaths of two individuals following a shooting incident that occurred on the morning of Monday, September 29, 2025. At approximately 8:00 a.m., the Joliet Police Department contacted the Coroner’s Office after responding to a residence in the 1800 block of Burshire Court, where two people were discovered with apparent gunshot wounds.
Upon arrival, officials from the Coroner’s Office formally pronounced both individuals deceased at the scene. The victims have been identified as 40-year-old Jennifer Heit and 40-year-old Ryan Heit, both residents of the Burshire Court home.
According to preliminary findings, both Jennifer and Ryan sustained fatal injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. However, officials emphasized that the final cause and manner of death will not be determined until forensic autopsies are completed. These autopsies are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Results from toxicology and further forensic analysis will also play a role in shaping the final report.
Law enforcement officers quickly secured the property after the initial discovery and began processing the scene with the assistance of investigators from the Kendall County Coroner’s Office. Detectives collected evidence and interviewed individuals in the area as they worked to piece together the circumstances that led to the tragic deaths. While the investigation remains active, officials have not released information regarding whether the incident is believed to be domestic in nature, or if there may be a broader public safety concern.
In a statement released late Monday, the Kendall County Coroner’s Office expressed its condolences to the family and loved ones of Jennifer and Ryan, while also stressing that information will remain limited until the investigation has progressed further. “We understand the community has many questions regarding this tragic event,” the statement read. “At this time, we are awaiting the results of forensic examinations before further details can be confirmed. Out of respect for the investigative process and the families involved, no additional information is available.”
The Joliet Police Department has also confirmed its active role in the case, working closely with the Coroner’s Office to ensure that all aspects of the investigation are thoroughly addressed. Officers have reassured the public that updates will be provided when possible, but emphasized patience as investigators pursue every lead.
News of the deaths has sent shockwaves through the quiet Plainfield neighborhood. Burshire Court residents described the area as typically peaceful, making Monday’s events all the more unsettling. Neighbors gathered outside as police and forensic teams worked throughout the day, many expressing their sadness and disbelief at the tragedy that had struck so close to home.
As the investigation continues, the Kendall County Coroner’s Office has directed all inquiries to its Public Information Office at PIO@kendallcoroner.org. Authorities are urging the community to avoid speculation until official findings are released and to respect the privacy of the Heit family during this painful time.
