In Loving Memory of Dr. James Abbington

It is with profound sadness that the GIA family announces the passing of one of our own. Dr. James Abbington (Jimmie) entered eternal life today. Jimmie was not only our colleague for more than 25 years but also a beloved friend whose presence touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed.

Jimmie was a true connector and mentor, always making time to encourage young musicians and composers particularly those of color to reach for the highest levels of their education and artistry. He celebrated each accomplishment with joy and never stopped offering guidance and support.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

As executive editor of the African American Church Music Series, Jimmie’s scholarship, talent, and infectious personality built an enduring legacy of preserving, publishing, and uplifting the sacred works of African American composers. His unwavering commitment to mentoring and teaching will continue to ripple through church music and inspire generations of musicians for decades to come.

Though the list of accolades he earned is long and richly deserved, we will remember him most as our teacher—one who taught us about music, history, faith, love for God and the church, and, most importantly, friendship.

Well done, good and faithful servant. May the angels lead you into paradise.
