The Azusa Pacific University community is grieving the loss of student-athlete Terra Whitaker, a member of the 2023 women’s volleyball roster, who passed away unexpectedly last weekend.

Whitaker, a major in business analytics with honors in humanities, was known as a dedicated student, a beloved coursemate, and a valued teammate. As an outside hitter for the Cougars, she was recognized for her athleticism, team spirit, and determination on and off the court.
Originally from Eastvale, California, Whitaker graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School before joining Azusa Pacific. Friends and teammates describe her as vibrant, compassionate, and full of life.
Beyond her commitment to volleyball, Whitaker loved spending time at the beach and was passionate about traveling, especially during the summer months. She enjoyed being with friends and often played pickleball, a game she grew to love.
Her sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of the Azusa Pacific volleyball team, the wider student body, and her community back home.
“Terra brought joy and light to every room she walked into,” one teammate shared. “She was more than a teammate—she was family.”
The university is offering counseling and support services to students, teammates, and faculty impacted by her loss. Plans to honor her memory are expected to be announced in the coming days.
