Toraya Reid, sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, was shot and killed in New Jersey.

In a press release, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said police officers in Jackson Township, located about 15 miles inland from the New Jersey coast, were called to an apartment building at around 11 a.m. local time on Saturday, Sept. 6.

They found an unresponsive woman, later identified as 28-year-old Toraya Reid, near the entrance of the Larsen Road apartment complex. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The prosecutor’s office said additional officers who responded to the scene saw a man, later identified as 29-year-old Shaquille Green, running down a nearby street. Billhimer said Toraya and Green had been in a “dating relationship.”

“Green was taken into custody without incident and transported to Jackson Township Police Headquarters,” the office wrote.

Green, of Jackson Township, has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with Reid’s death, according to Billhimer.

Toraya was the eldest of the Reid siblings, including Naz and younger sister Jakahya.

Speaking to the Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine in 2023, Naz opened up about his sister’s protective nature.

“My older sister is super protective,” he said of Toraya. “She treats us like she’s our parent.”

The siblings all attended Roselle Catholic High School in northern New Jersey, according to the New York Post. Naz told the Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine that Toraya briefly played softball.

In a Facebook post, younger sister Jakahya asked the public for privacy, writing that she couldn’t believe the ordeal wasn’t “some kind of sick joke.”

“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation… and yet here I am. Facing the unimaginable. Without you by my side,” she wrote.

“My sister has a name,” Jakahya added in part in an additional post. “She is not just some girl, she’s not just the NBA superstar sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid.”

Green is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail ahead of a detention hearing.
