A Waterford man was killed Friday morning in a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 after plywood spilled from a tractor-trailer, triggering a chain-reaction crash, Connecticut State Police said.

The crash happened around 7:42 a.m. near Exit 64 in Clinton. According to investigators, a tractor-trailer traveling north lost a large number of plywood sheets, which scattered across the southbound lanes. The debris set off a four-vehicle collision, with cars striking one another as well as a metal guardrail and the concrete median barrier.

One of the drivers, Nicholas John “Nick” Kupec, 39, of Waterford, was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Three other motorists were taken to Middlesex Health Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook. Two sustained minor injuries, while the third appeared unhurt, police said. The driver of the tractor-trailer and a passenger were not injured.

The truck involved in the crash is owned by Texas-based Alonzo W Griffin Enterprises LLC. A representative for the company has not yet commented.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation closed the Route 145 overpass, which runs over I-95, after reporting structural damage caused in the aftermath of the wreck.

Nick Kupec was deeply rooted in his Connecticut community. Born in Milford and a graduate of North Haven High School, he went on to build a life in Waterford with his wife, Kristy Kupec.

For 18 years, Nick worked with Metro-North Railroad and was a proud member of the Transport Workers Union. He also served as the recording secretary for TWU Local 2055, where colleagues described him as a dedicated worker and advocate for his fellow members.

Friends and family remember Nick as a hardworking, kindhearted man with an unwavering commitment to both his loved ones and his union family.
