Ashton, remembered for his wit, humor, and vibrant spirit, carried his dedication and drive into higher education. After high school, he attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) as a Meridian Scholar on a full-ride scholarship. Majoring in marketing, Ashton distinguished himself as a creative strategist and student leader, committed to building meaningful connections and leaving a positive mark on campus.
At SIUE, Ashton pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Pi Chapter, where his leadership and generosity earned him the love and respect of his fraternity brothers. In a statement, the chapter expressed their grief:
“It is with deep shock and sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of our dear Brother Ashton Carter. Early this morning, he was tragically involved in an accident that took him from us far too soon. Ashton was an extraordinary man—hardworking, witty, humble, and a true light in every room he entered. He was always willing to go the extra mile for others and stood as a true pillar within our community. Brother Carter’s presence will forever be missed, and his impact will never be forgotten. Continue to shine in the Omega Chapter, our chapter of Sweet Rest.”
Ashton was also the younger brother of Common Ground Foundation alumnus Antawun Carter (Class of 2016), and his family, friends, and mentors describe him as someone whose joy and laughter lifted every room he entered.
