Authorities have confirmed the identities of victims following a mass stabbing that left one woman dead, multiple others injured, and the suspect deceased in Hollow Water First Nation on Thursday morning.
Jenny Bushie Stab Death
RCMP identified the deceased victim as 18-year-old Marina Free Simard. Another victim has been named as Jenny Isabel Bushie, who was the suspect’s mother and also related to Marina. A third victim, Michael Raven, survived the attack but remains in hospital with serious injuries.
According to his children, Jordan Hamilton and Christy Williams, Raven had been asleep at home when the suspect broke in, woke him, and stabbed him multiple times. He sustained a punctured lung and other injuries but is awake, conscious, and speaking.
“The community is all shaken up from it. It is not something that happens in Hollow Water,” Williams said. “This is scary for everybody.… This incident doesn’t sum up Hollow Water.”
Police said at least eight people, aged 18 to 60, were injured in the attack. Six were transported by road to Winnipeg hospitals, while two were airlifted by STARS air ambulance. A Code Orange alert—a mass casualty protocol—was activated at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre but cleared later in the morning after patients were stabilized.
RCMP also confirmed that the suspect, Tyrone Simard, died following a serious motor vehicle collision with a responding female RCMP officer. The officer, who was seriously injured in the crash, is expected to make a full recovery.
Mounties stressed there is no further risk to public safety, though investigators are expected to remain in Hollow Water through the day. Highway 304 was temporarily closed in both directions south of Black River First Nation due to the investigation.
Shared Health issued a statement acknowledging the scale of the tragedy:
“We were alerted to a mass casualty event on Hollow Water First Nation this morning. A Code Orange Alert was declared at the Health Sciences Centre shortly thereafter. Multiple patients were brought in with varying levels of acuity. Our thoughts are with the victims, patients, families, and loved ones.”
The stabbings have left the small community, located about 160 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, shaken. Vigils and support services are being organized as families and residents process the violence.
This is a developing story. RCMP are expected to release additional details at a news conference in Winnipeg later today.
