Heartbreak has struck the Beckville community following the tragic death of Jose Mercado, a young child whose life was cut short on Thursday morning, August 28th.
At 6:52 a.m., Panola County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a shooting at a home on Jones Street. Deputies from the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, Constable Precincts 2 & 3, the Beckville Volunteer Fire Department, and UT Health EMS rushed to the scene. When they arrived, Jose was found with a gunshot wound as family members desperately performed CPR. Despite the tireless efforts of first responders, Jose’s injuries proved fatal.
The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Justice of the Peace were called to the scene. Authorities confirmed that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, and because of the child’s age, Child Protective Services will conduct a parallel investigation. A full report will also be submitted to the Panola County Criminal District Attorney’s Office for review.
This devastating loss has deeply impacted not only Jose’s family but also Beckville ISD, where he was known and loved. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office extended heartfelt condolences to all grieving this tragedy.
