HARFORD COUNTY, Md. — A dramatic vehicle pursuit involving a box truck shut down a stretch of Interstate 95 in Harford County Friday, drawing a massive response from state and local police, SWAT, K9 units, and federal agencies. Authorities confirmed that the suspect is in custody following the incident, which left one officer injured.
According to Maryland State Police, the chase began after reports of a box truck driving erratically on backroads, at times traveling the wrong way. Witnesses said the vehicle had blown tires and was riding on its rims while swerving dangerously through traffic.
The pursuit, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies, ended at mile marker 82.8 on I-95. During the chase, an officer was struck and seriously injured. That officer was airlifted by helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Their condition has not been released.
Eyewitnesses described the truck barreling down Route 22 with hazard lights on, weaving past cars and even passing on the shoulder. One motorist reported seeing police execute a U-turn in the middle of Route 22 to continue pursuit. Another described officers tackling and handcuffing a suspect near Exit 80.
In addition to state and local law enforcement, multiple unmarked federal vehicles responded. While the nature of their involvement has not been confirmed, some witnesses speculated that immigration authorities may have been connected to the operation.
Meanwhile, a second scene developed near Snake Lane and Route 136, where a heavy police and SWAT presence was observed. Witnesses reported seeing an armored BearCat vehicle on site as tactical units secured the area. The relationship between the two scenes has not yet been clarified by authorities.
One driver who narrowly avoided a collision during the chase said the truck nearly struck his car near Route 136 and Route 543, moments before additional state troopers joined the pursuit.
Officials have not released the identity of the suspect or confirmed what triggered the initial traffic stop. Drones and K9 units were deployed to help track the individual following the chase.
The incident caused major traffic disruptions along I-95 for hours, as law enforcement vehicles flooded the area. Authorities say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
