A memorial now stands at the corner of Main Street and Fourth Street in Crossville, Tennessee, honoring the memory of 63-year-old Albert Sturgill Jr., who was tragically shot and killed on Friday. The incident has left the community mourning, while local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Albert Sturgill Jr., known around town for his distinctive prosthetic leg, was a familiar sight to residents of Crossville. Larry Doster, owner of Crossville Trophy & Gifts, recalled seeing Sturgill frequently as he rode his bicycle through town.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

“I have seen him numerous times because he’s obvious he has a prosthetic leg, had a prosthetic leg, and he rides his bicycle all over town,” Doster said, describing Sturgill as a recognizable and regular presence in the community.

According to Doster, he observed Sturgill near the war memorial in downtown Crossville on the day of the incident. Reports indicate that Sturgill appeared to be making an offensive gesture toward the memorial, raising two middle fingers.

This action drew the attention of bystanders, and an argument reportedly ensued. “Those that were disagreeing with him—and I don’t know how it escalated, I couldn’t hear any of the conversations that were happening—but it started off just one other person, and two, and three, and four, and there was a crowd of at least four or five people. I’m not exactly sure what was said,” Doster recalled.

Shortly after the altercation, investigators say Eric Brandon Garris shot and killed Sturgill. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Crossville Police Department are cooperating to determine the full details of what occurred.

“The investigation is still very much ongoing, and we’re learning new facts every day, gathering more information,” said 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway.

Initially, Garris was charged with attempted second-degree murder. However, after Sturgill succumbed to his injuries over the weekend, the charge was upgraded to second-degree murder.

Dunaway explained the distinction: “The distinction between a first-degree murder and second-degree murder is the intent of the shooter. We have not gathered all the information yet, so at this point in the game—based on the information we have right now—that is the appropriate charge. That’s going to be constantly reevaluated as the process goes along.”

The shooting has prompted an outpouring of grief and reflection in Crossville, with residents expressing sorrow over the sudden and violent loss of a member of their community. The memorial at Main Street and Fourth Street serves as a reminder of Sturgill’s life and the impact his presence had on those around him.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information related to the case to contact the Crossville Police Department at 931-484-7231 or submit a tip through Crime Stoppers at 931-200-1173. As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on supporting Sturgill’s family and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

Albert Sturgill Jr.’s life, though tragically cut short, is being remembered by friends, neighbors, and the Crossville community. The memorial serves not only as a tribute to his memory but also as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety, understanding, and compassion within communities.
