MEARS, Mich. (August 17, 2025) — Authorities in Oceana County are searching for an armed suspect following a shooting incident Sunday morning in Silver Lake, which left at least three people injured and sent the community into lockdown.
The shooting was first reported around 10:41 a.m. near W. Fox Road in Mears, prompting a heavy law enforcement response. Initial radio traffic indicated multiple gunshots fired, with at least one victim struck in the thigh. First responders applied a tourniquet on scene while awaiting EMS transport. By 11:30 a.m., a man in his 50s was reported to be awake and talking while being treated for his injuries. Additional victims were later confirmed, though their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Suspect Search and Public Safety Measures
Authorities have identified the suspect as an adult male with a documented history of mental health struggles. Officials also noted that he had recently experienced significant personal hardship, including losing his home in a fire. Police have stressed that the suspect should be considered dangerous.
By 11:05 a.m., law enforcement had established a perimeter in the area, urging the public to avoid Silver Lake and surrounding roads. Campers at Silver Lake Resort and Campground were ordered to shelter inside their campers, while nearby churches and businesses went into lockdown as police worked to secure the area.
The search has grown into a large-scale operation, with K-9 teams, tactical units, drones, and a Michigan State Police helicopter deployed to assist. Roads across Mears and Silver Lake remain closed as of early afternoon.

Residents described a heavy police presence throughout the region as tactical teams combed wooded areas for the gunman. At least one church reported being placed on lockdown with people inside awaiting safe escort from police.
Authorities are asking all residents and visitors in the Silver Lake area to remain indoors and avoid travel until the suspect is located.
The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the name of the suspect or confirmed whether he was specifically targeting the victims. The investigation remains active, and updates are expected as the search continues.
